JMU FOOTBALL HISTORY

Since its inception in 1972, the James Madison University Football program has been defined by vision, dedication, and growth. The story of JMU Football is one of perseverance, teamwork, and leadership — a legacy carried forward by every coach who took the helm and every Duke who took the field.

Challace McMillin

(1972–1984)

Challace McMillin was the founding head coach of JMU Football, leading the Dukes from their very first season. With a record of 67–60–2, he built the foundation of the program’s success. Under his leadership, JMU celebrated its only unbeaten season in 1975 with a 9-0-1 record. McMillin’s pioneering vision and competitive spirit shaped the program’s early identity and lasting culture.

Joe Purzycki

(1985–1990)

Joe Purzycki continued McMillin’s legacy, elevating JMU to a higher level of competition. His six seasons saw the team establish itself as a consistent contender, laying the groundwork for future national recognition.

Rip Scherer

(1991–1994)

Rip Scherer brought renewed energy and strategic focus to JMU Football. His leadership emphasized discipline and player development, helping the program transition through the early 1990s with stability and confidence.

Alex Wood

(1995–1998)

Alex Wood guided the Dukes during a time of competitive growth, focusing on athletic excellence and academic balance. His tenure strengthened team culture and prepared JMU for the championship era that followed.

Mickey Matthews

(1999–2013)

Mickey Matthews led JMU to national prominence, capturing the 2004 Division I-AA (now FCS) National Championship, the first in school history. Under his leadership, the Dukes made multiple playoff appearances and achieved a legendary upset over Virginia Tech in 2010. Matthews’ era solidified JMU’s reputation as one of the premier programs in college football.

Everett Withers

(2014–2015)

Everett Withers brought intensity and exposure to the Dukes, posting a 19–7 record over two seasons. His leadership earned JMU back-to-back playoff appearances and national attention, highlighted when ESPN’s College GameDay featured the Dukes in 2015.

Mike Houston

(2016–2018)

Mike Houston guided JMU through one of its most dominant modern eras, leading the team to the 2016 FCS National Championship and a runner-up finish in 2017. His leadership revitalized the program’s competitive drive and reinforced JMU’s championship mindset.

Curt Cignetti

(2019–2023)

Curt Cignetti continued the momentum, leading the Dukes into their successful transition to the FBS. His tenure was marked by discipline, consistency, and record-breaking performances that positioned JMU among top-tier programs.

Bob Chesney

(2023–Present)

Bob Chesney brings a new era of leadership, passion, and determination to JMU Football. With a focus on player development, culture, and winning with integrity, Chesney is guiding the Dukes into the future while honoring the proud legacy of those who came before.
